The Top Tools and Techniques Used by Professional Roofing Contractors

Professional roofers use many tools and techniques to safely repair and replace the roofs on buildings. If you've ever had your roof replaced, you may wonder how roofers manage to effectively work on angled roofs. You've likely also noticed tools that aren't in the typical toolbox.

Roofing is an essential business. Anyone who has experienced a roof leak knows this all too well. Although it doesn't take a college degree to become a roofer, this trade requires training and skill. Here are a few of the most common tools and techniques of professional roofers:

Tools Of The Trade

Professional roofers have several tools in their tool belts that are needed to install and repair roofs. However, the actual tools used for a specific job may vary depending on the type of roof that's being installed.

The top tools used by roofers include but are not limited to nail guns, pry bars, tacker staplers, utility knives, hatchets, scoop shovels, and specialized tear-off tools for shingle removal. Occasionally, roofers may even use an air compressor.

Roofing jobs consist of two main tasks: tearing off and replacement. Each of these tasks requires certain tools.

Tear-off Tools

Tear-offs usually aren't necessary for basic roof repair jobs. However, the first step of total roof replacement is removing the old faulty roof. To accomplish this, roofers will use pry bars and roofing shovels to tear off the current roof. They'll usually lay a tarp over the roof to prevent water damage until the new roof has been installed.

Roof Replacement Tools

Once the old roof has been torn off, the roofers will use nail guns, tacker staplers, hatchets, or roofing hammers to secure the new top. When the size of a shingle needs to be adjusted, they'll often use a tape measure and utility knife to make the size of the shingle just right.

Roofing Techniques

Many roofing contractors hire feeders who will carry the shingles up the ladder and sit on the edge of the roof as they slide the shingles over to the roofer. This technique saves a lot of time and effort.

Safety is first and foremost in the roofing business, so you may see professional roofers wearing harnesses attached to an anchor to avoid falling. Alternatively, they may use a toe board or even temporarily install a guardrail.

Of course, asphalt shingles are only one of the many types of roofing material. Talk to your local roofing contractor about your options to choose the best type of roof for your home. Professional roofers may use different tools and techniques depending on the type of roof that's being installed.
